Once thought extinct, the masked bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus ridgwayi) gets its name from its clear, whistled “bobwhite” call. It makes this call when separated and looking to regroup. Native to southern Arizona and northern Mexico, habitat loss and the increased use of pesticides are thought to be the culprits behind its endangered status. The adult male masked bobwhite has a rich rufous-red (cinnamon) breast and a black head and throat.
