Burrowing owls (Athene cuniculariaare) the only owl species to live underground in burrows, often taken over from other animals like prairie dogs. Relatively small, long-legged owls, they have a distinctive nodding behaviour and can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees. Also called the shoco owl, they are found in open, dry areas with low vegetation across North America, throughout Central America, on some Caribbean islands, and in most of South America, excluding the Amazon rainforest.
