The rare, flightless Kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus), also known as the "ghost of the forest", is endemic to New Caledonia in the South Pacific, where it is also the national emblem. While nearly flightless, Kagus use their large wings for elaborate displays during courtship and territorial disputes. They fan their wings to reveal striking black, white, and rust-coloured patterns. They live in rain forests as well as drier forests. Kagus are known for their pale grey plumage, bright red legs, and a distinctive crest that they raise when displaying. They are also known for their loud, piercing calls, which they use to defend their territory.
