Named for its shy, retiring ways, the hermit thrush (Catharus guttatus) is rather secretive and stays out of sight most of the time – though it can often be heard singing its beautiful, flute-like songs. A medium-sized North American thrush, it breeds in coniferous or mixed woods across Canada, southern Alaska, and the northeastern and western United States. The hermit thrush is the state bird of Vermont.
