The Parma wallaby (Macropus parma) is named after the Australian Aboriginal word for this species. A shy creature from New South Wales, it was thought to be extinct until rediscovered in the mid 1960s. In 1967 it was found that they still existed in the forests near Gosford, New South Wales. Further investigation found it in forests along the Great Dividing Range from near Gosford almost as far north as the Queensland border. The Parma wallaby is the smallest member of the genus Macropus – the largest is the red kangeroo.
