The red collared dove (Streptopelia tranquebarica), also known as the red turtle dove, is named for its colour and the dark ring on its neck. The scientific name tranquebarica, is derived from Tranquebar, now Tharangambadi, a town in southern India where the species was first formally described. The male has a reddish-brown body with a blue-grey head and a distinct black half-collar on its neck. The female has a brownish or buff-grey head and a pinkish-tinged breast. It prefers open country with trees and bushes in tropical and subtropical Asia, with a distribution that includes India, Southeast Asia, and parts of East Asia.
