The mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) have an enlarged hyoid bone, a hollow bone near the vocal chords, which amplifies the calls made by the male, and is the reason for the name "howler". Howlers are found in tropical Central and South America. Their cacophonous cries can be heard up to three miles away.
