The Azure-crowned Hummingbird (Saucerottia cyanocephala) has an iridescent azure blue crown that flashes in the light – though it can often appear dull green and white. French naturalist René Lesson allocated the Latin name Ornismya cyanocephala in 1829 from Greek roots meaning blue-headed - the name was later updated to Saucerottia cyanocephala. Saucerottia honours French ornithologist & collector Jules Bourcier, whose common name was Saucerotte. It favours moist montane forests, oak-pine woodlands, and sometimes lowland pine savannas in Central America, from southeastern Mexico through Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, and into Nicaragua.
