The endangered Indian hog deer (Axis porcinus ) is named because it has a pig-like stature – short legs and a muscular body – and from the hog-like manner in which it runs through forests with its head hung low. It ducks under obstacles instead of leaping over like other deer species. Found in northern India, Pakistan and Southeast Asia, the coat is dark brownish – males tend to be darker than the females. A dark black stripe runs down the spine from the neck to the base of the tail.
