The Nilgiri wood pigeon (Columba elphinstonii) is named after the Nilgiri Mountains (or Blue Mountains) located in the Western Ghats of southern India, where the bird was first documented. A large pigeon endemic to the moist deciduous forests of the Western Ghats in southwestern India, its most striking feature is the black and white checkerboard pattern on the back of its neck. It has chestnut-maroon upperparts and greyish head and underparts.
