The purple-throated sunbird (Leptocoma sperata), also known as Van Hasselt's Sunbird, is found in Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. There are more than 130 species of sunbirds spread across Africa, Southern Asia and Australia - they are the eastern equivalent of the hummingbirds.
