The white-naped pheasant-pigeon (Otidiphaps nobilis aruensis) – also known as the Aru Islands pheasant-pigeon – has a distinctive white spot on its nape, has terrestrial, ground-dwelling habits, and has a long, laterally compressed tail, which gives it a pheasant-like look, despite being an authentic pigeon. It is endemic to the Aru Islands*, a small archipelago near New Guinea, whereas the Green-naped pheasant pigeon has a green nape and lives in New Guinea. The white-naped prefers dense vegetation in the tropical rainforests and monsoon forests of lowland and mountainous areas.
