The purple honeycreeper (Cyanerpes caeruleus) is named for its purple or blue colour, while honeycreeper refers to its feeding on nectar and its thin, curved bill, which it uses to reach into flowers. The scientific name, Cyanerpes caeruleus, combines the Ancient Greek word kuanos for dark-blue and the Latin word caeruleus for blue. The purple honeycreeper is found in tropical northern South America, from the Amazon and Orinoco basins to the Guianas, Trinidad, and coastal regions of Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador. It inhabits the canopy of humid lowland and premontane forests, as well as forest edges, gardens, and plantations like cocoa and citrus.
