The fallow deer (Dama dama) is named for the light brown colour of the deer's pelt. An elegant, medium-sized deer, with a typically spotted coat, it has four main variations of coat – Common (tan/fawn), Menil (paler colouration), Melanistic (black) and leucistic – a genuine colour variety, not albinistic. Fallow deer are native to Asia but are now common in the UK and in Europe. Agile and fast in case of danger, fallow deer can run at a maximum speed of 50 km/h (30 mph) over short distances.
