The endangered Sumatran laughingthrush (Garrulax bicolor), also known as the black-and-white laughingthrush, is endemic to broadleaf evergreen highland forest on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The laughingthrush name comes from its complex, melodious, and loud calls which resemble human laughter, whistles, and trills. It has a rapidly declining population due to intensive illegal trapping for the caged-bird trade and habitat loss from deforestation.
