The maleo (Macrocephalon maleo), endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia, lays eggs five times the size of a chicken egg, which are buried in the sand and incubated by solar or geothermal heat. The chicks hatch fully developed, able to fly and fend for themselves immediately, requiring no parental care. Maleos inhabit lowland and hill forests, often near beaches or areas with volcanic sand where they nest.
