The rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) is a sandy monkey with a pink face and rear. It is native to South, Central, and Southeast Asia and has the widest geographic range of all non-human primates. Rhesus macaques live in troops, and are noted for their tendency to move from rural to urban areas. They can adapt to many habitats, and some can even become accustomed to living in human communities – especially in India, where Hindus regard the animals as sacred and usually leave them undisturbed.
