The orange-bellied leafbird (Chloropsis hardwickii) is named after the adult male, which is brightly coloured with a unique orange belly, making it easily separated from the other leafbirds. Native to hilly woodlands in the central and eastern Himalayas, the adult male has a grass-green back, a dark purplish-blue tail and flight feathers, and a black mask over its eyes, throat and chest. Leafbirds are good at mimicking sounds learnt from imitating the calls of other birds. So the orange-bellied may copy bulbuls, sunbirfds, tits, magpies and even eagles. The female is mostly bright green, and can be distinguished from the entirely green juvenile by a lilac-blue streak below the eye.
