The black turnstone (Arenaria melanocephala) is named because it often forages by turning over stones and other objects. It is one of two species of turnstone in the genus Arenaria – the ruddy turnstone (AArenaria interpres) is the other. Rarely found away from spraying waves, the black turnstone lives along the Pacific coast and breeds in Alaska.
