The red-capped parrot (Purpureicephalus spurius) has a bright crimson crown, green-yellow cheeks, and a distinctive long bill. Purpureicephalus combines Greek for purple head and Latin for red, and spurius means false or illegitimate, given by early scientists because juveniles are predominantly green, almost like separate species. Endemic to Southwest Australia, it lives in Marri and Jarrah eucalypt forests and woodlands, farmland, orchards, and urban parks with mature trees, relying heavily on the Marri tree for food.
