The Gascon (Sus scrofa domesticus) is a rare breed of domestic pig which has survived near extinction to thrive in the Midi-Pyrénées region mountains in southwest France. Traces from the Gallo-Roman period have been found in the historic region of Gascony, which lends its name to this breed. Like most old-fashioned pigs, it is prone to becoming very fat, but it is vigorous, hardy, thrifty and tolerant of hot climates. The sows are prolific and have a good supply of milk for their litters.
