Nuttall's woodpecker (Dryobates nuttallii) has black wings and tail feathers with white barring and is named after naturalist Thomas Nuttall – an English botanist and zoologist who lived and worked in America from 1808 until 1841. Various plants and birds were named after Nuttall. Adult males have a distinguishable red crown which females do not. Endemic to oak and woodlands in California and northwestern Baja California, it is closely related to the ladder-backed woodpecker of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Mexico.
