The Australian ringneck (Barnardius zonarius) is a a medium-sized parrot that is mostly green with a distinctive yellow ring around its hindneck. One Western Australian sub-species is known as the Twenty-Eight Parrot because sounds like a three-note twenty-eight. Early descriptions even mentioned the sound as being like the French vingt-huit. The Australian ringneck's scientific name Barnardius" honours English ornithologist Edward Barnard, while "zonarius" comes from the Latin word zona, meaning "girdle" or "belt," which refers to the bird's yellow neck collar. Some subspecies have a black or green head, while others have a green head with cheek patches, and they can have different colour markings on the belly and forehead, such as a red frontal band. The Australian ringneck parrot is found throughout Australia, except for coastal eastern regions, inhabiting a wide range of habitats including woodlands, forests, savannas, farmlands, and semi-arid scrublands.
