The red-fan parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus) is named because it possesses elongated neck feathers that can be raised to form an elaborate fan of red and blue neck feathers when excited or threatened. Also known as the hawk-headed parrot, these parrots are known for being vocal, intelligent, and forming strong, lifelong bonds with a single mate. They nest in tree holes and have a varied diet of fruits, nuts, and seeds. Its habitat is the Amazon Rainforest in South America, where it lives in the canopy of dense, humid lowland forests. Its distribution includes Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. It prefers to live in the upper layers of the forest and nests in holes or hollows in trees and stumps.
