The Red billed Buffalo Weaver (Bubalornis niger) was first described in 1836 by Scottish explorer Andrew Smith who recorded the birds feeding on buffalo, hence the genus and group name. The red-billed buffalo weaver is differentiated from the white-billed buffalo weaver (Bubalornis albirostris) by the colour of its bill. The nest is usually found in a thorny tree or in a windmill near areas inhabited by humans. When humans depart from particular areas, so do the red-billed buffalo weavers.
