Rüppell's weaver (Ploceus galbula) is named in honour of Eduard Rüppell (1794-1884), a 19th-century German explorer, collector, and zoologist. The male Rüppell's weaver can be distinguished from males of several other similar species by his red eyes and reddish facial mask. Females and juveniles are plainer. Brightly coloured in yellow or red and black plumage, these weavers occur in dry woodlands, bush country, dry acacia, savannah and in gardens on the horn of Africa and the south-western Arabian Peninsula.
