The verdin (Auriparus flaviceps), is a species of penduline tit. In French, Verdin translates to yellowhammer and serves both as a description of its head color and its foraging behavior. Verdins are permanent residents of arid habitats in Mexico and the Desert Southwest of the United States. It has one notable distinction: it is not closely related to any other bird in the western hemisphere.
