The largest dragonfly species in New Zealand, the endemic bush giant dragonfly (Uropetala carovei) is known in Māori as kapokapowai (meaning "water snatcher"). The name kapokapowai or kapowai refers to its aquatic larval stage (nymph), which shoots out a long, extendable jaw to grab prey.
